What's New and Changing

SSL VPN Available for System Administrators

Posted Date: 18 Jul 2007

Effective Date: 18 Jul 2007

Effective July 16, 2007, system administrators will be able to utilize Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network (SSL VPN) for secure, web-based access to critical University systems for administrative and maintenance purposes. SSL VPN provides a higher level of compatibility with client platforms, remote network and firewall configurations, and delivers a more reliable connection for users.

The next generation of VPN service made available by Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT), SSL VPN encrypts and secures data transmissions through a web-interface in much the same way financial institutions and e-commerce sites protect your sensitive data. Access is granted through LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) groups established and approved by NUIT and allows system administrators, vendors, and external collaborators to access University systems through a secure web interface.

Impact on End User

Users with SSL VPN access will be able to access University systems through Web Proxy, a web-based interface that can provide access to web-based applications, file servers, remote desktop connections, and terminal sessions. A full tunnel, or 'Network Connect,' client is available for applications and clients that need more specialized access.

SSL VPN can also grant system access to vendors and external collaborators as needed.
