NUIT Increases E-mail Defense System Security

Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) has increased the level of security within the University's E-mail Defense System ( EDS ) – the system that scans and filters junk e-mail, phishing attempts, viruses, and malicious high-risk attachments sent to the University community – to better ensure a safe computing environment.

Additional junk e-mail filtering will occur when e-mail originating from the University's central mail servers (casbah, hecky, lulu, and merle) is sent to a non-Northwestern affiliated e-mail address.

Impact on End User

EDS uses antiviral software, much like that used on personal computers, that scans and prevents contaminated mail from reaching your mailbox.

The decrease in the amount of incoming junk e-mail provides faculty, staff, and students with increased computer security and allows for easier e-mail management.

Users can access EDS to manage user-specific sender lists and configure various junk e-mail filtering options.
