Effective Date: 14 Sep 2009
Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) has assumed the responsibility of administering the University's Red Hat site license and now centrally distributes Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) v.4 and v.5, free for download, for the University community.
RHEL is an open source operating system that is used in, but not limited to, advanced research computing such as Northwestern's new high performance computing environment.
The site license provides access to the Server, Workstation, or Desktop versions of RHEL for University-owned computers. Personal systems owned by University faculty, staff, and students can be installed with RHEL Workstation or Desktop versions.
Impact on End User |
Designated University school/department NU RHEL Satellite administrators have login access to the centralized NU RHEL Satellite Server that administers software installers, updates, and security patches.
University faculty, staff, and students may download RHEL from the NUIT RHEL ISO Repository. Once the operating system is installed, an activation key is required to register the machine with the NU RHEL Satellite Server.
University researchers interested in using RHEL on their school/department high performance computing (HPC) equipment or with Quest the University's large scale, shared, high performance computing system, should e-mail art-support@northwestern.edu to obtain a RHEL HPC activation key. Please note : Access to Quest will be available early winter quarter 2010.
