Elimination of Sunday Maintenance Window

In order to conserve University resources and better utilize current technology, effective immediately, Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) is no longer conducting regularly scheduled Sunday morning maintenance to University enterprise applications.

“The concept of a reserved time during the week when any and all services can be interrupted without notice is a legacy of years past when technology was a limited factor in the University's business,” said Tom Board, NUIT Associate Vice-President, Cyberinfrastructure, who oversees the data centers and network. “The situation today is completely different, with most parts of the University now reliant upon information that is only available through computer systems. These services should be available when the University community needs them –even at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. We feel that we can reasonably meet that expectation.”

Events labeled “Central Service Maintenance”, “Scheduled Maintenance”, “Network Maintenance” and “NUTV Maintenance” will no longer be posted to PlanIt Purple, the University's calendar.

NUIT will continue its current practice of delivering targeted maintenance pre- announcements and Status of University Services postings on the NUIT Web site.

“We strive to keep scheduled service interruptions away from business hours and busy portions of the calendar,” said RuthAnn Ostrowski, NUIT Service Operations Director, Cyberinfrastructure. “As we build an increasingly robust and redundant architecture, we will begin to maintain some systems during the business day with no noticeable effects on service.”

Impact on End User

NUIT System outages, maintenance, and other important system information will continue to be posted on the Status University Services Web page.

University business units responsible for major applications will continue to receive pre-announcements of individual maintenance announcements and will notify their customers of any maintenance that will affect their services.
