Northwestern Partners with Google for Student E-mail and Other Services
Description
In response to student feedback, Northwestern University is partnering with Google to provide e-mail and other services to students beginning this spring. The idea for the service began when students from the Associated Student Government (ASG) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) requested such a partnership during a collaborative meeting with Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT). NUIT announces Google Apps for Education will soon available to students through "@u.northwestern.edu". @u.northwestern.edu, powered by Google Apps for Education, will provide advanced and easy-to-use tools such as searchable, two gigabyte e-mail services, a large integrated address book space, robust security features, integrated calendaring, instant messaging, online document collaboration, and online support.

Northwestern's partnership with Google will bring the following services to students:
This project will be deployed in a phased manner. Undergraduates and most School of Continuing Studies students will be invited to sign up for the "@u.northwestern.edu" service, powered by Google Apps for Education, in early June 2007. It is estimated that by December 2007, the "@u.northwestern.edu" service will be the default e-mail service provide for incoming undergraduate students. Graduate students will be provided access to this new service at some point during the 2007-2008 academic year. Graduates who are a part of the new system will have the option of keeping "@u.northwestern.edu" accounts post graduation. When "active students" become "non students", they are given the option to purge their "@u.northwestern.edu" account or do nothing and keep the account post graduation. Additional deployment timelines will be shared as they are developed.
