Tool Tips: We Asked; You Answered

In Take 5’s December issue, we asked you to share pro tips or technology hacks that make your life easier. Thanks to all who offered their insight. We will continue to update this resource page when new tips are offered, so keep them coming! Share a tip.

Bright Remind Me is a reminder app for Teams. It pins and schedules a custom reminder in a Microsoft chat that you can follow up on later and sends you a notification. This is an easy and quick way to send reminders that help me know what I need to revisit in a timely manner.  – Karen Allen, Data Analyst, Data Management and Analytics

Adding Zoom or Teams to Outlook Meeting is a quick and easy way to automatically add a virtual meeting by default to a meeting invite with one or more participants. I also include a link to Microsoft Bookings With Me in my email signature. It’s a personal online scheduling tool that shows my Outlook Calendar availability (against your availability if you sign in) and can be used with external vendors to book an open time on your calendar. See the MS Bookings Quick Reference Guide for Faculty and Staff to get started. - Ishrat Fatima, Systems Analyst Lead, Enterprise Systems Human Resources and Student

Microsoft Forms is a versatile and easy tool to use! Next time you gather a group for a meeting or need feedback for an event, this should be your go-to tool! It is a simple way to collect data, plan an event, or take a poll. After data is collected, an Excel sheet is generated, giving the user an easy way to manage the information. Performing a restart of your computer at least once a week ensures that updates are applied to resolve bugs, add features, and apply security updates. It’s the first step in troubleshooting issues.

Restarting your computer also provides these additional benefits:

  • Frees up memory, which, in turn, helps with performance
  • Improves software performance
  • Helps resolve hardware and software issues

As a reminder, a shutdown is not the same as a restart! – Scott Terry, Manager, Endpoint Device Management, and Robert Trujillo, Technical Support Specialist Lead, Endpoint Device Management

Collaboration Services offered the following tips:

  • Renaming Group Chats (three or more participants) is a great way to organize your Teams chats by topic or projects discussed. Simply open the chat, click on the pencil at the end of the names of the participants, type in the new name, and save.
  • Pin frequently used channels in Teams to access the channels you use the most. Select the ellipsis (…) and choose pin. Pinned channels will indicate when there are unread posts.
  • You can quickly access your content displayed at the top left of the OneDrive web app display. The lower half of the content pane is quick access to SharePoint libraries in Teams and standalone SharePoint sites. If you are unsure how to leverage OneDrive and all its associated features, please check out the training material created by Microsoft.
