New Box Storage Quota Takes Effect June 1

Effective Date: May 6, 2021

Northwestern is implementing a Box storage limit of 5TB per account effective June 1, 2021. This service change is necessary to mitigate the risk of extending beyond the University’s contracted Box storage limits and prepare for the transition from Box to Microsoft 365 file-sharing solutions in August 2022.

When the 5TB storage limit is reached, users will receive a Box-generated error message and cannot upload new data and make changes to existing data until space is created. Northwestern IT recommends periodically checking storage amounts to avoid the potential for a service interruption.

Those approaching this limit should consider reducing their Box footprint by deleting unneeded files, and if necessary, consider requesting a SharePoint site. Each site offers 25TB of storage, and if more than one site is needed, Northwestern IT can assign a SharePoint hub site. A hub site offers consistent navigation and allows you to search across all associated sites.
