Digital Literacy in Teaching and Learning with Generative AI

Workshops and Resources to Support Exploration

Preparation for Now and Beyond

Promoting effective teaching techniques and technologies for instructors to foster transformative learning experiences

Generative AI technology tools have changed the way many faculty and students engage with their coursework and think about teaching and learning. The challenges and opportunities presented by these tools can be daunting, and faculty are encouraged to take advantage of the many resources available through Northwestern IT and its partners, including the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, the University Libraries, and others across the University.

Generative AI 101

Generative AI 101 is a robust, cohort-based faculty development program that aims to enhance instructor and student AI literacy, foster cross-disciplinary instructor communities of practice, and create a dynamic library of materials and resources for our teaching community to expand their experience and expertise with generative AI. There will be three cohorts offered in the 2025–26 academic year.

Student Literacy Canvas Module

How to Use Generative AI Responsibly in Academia, an AI literacy module that speaks directly to students, is now available to import into any Canvas course site. It can be integrated as part of coursework or as a stand-alone learning opportunity for students as they seek to understand the academic and professional implications of generative AI. The module was developed in partnership between Northwestern IT and the Office of the Provost and has been reviewed by faculty in the Generative AI 101 program.

Faculty AI Literacy Canvas Module

Generative AI Literacy Foundations for Northwestern Instructors, an introductory Canvas course designed for faculty, is available on demand for self-enrollment. This course prepares faculty to address the challenges presented by generative AI thoughtfully and effectively by setting a standard of literacy and shared vocabulary for the teaching community. The module covers basic concepts and touches on issues of bias, ethics, and data privacy. It is also the prerequisite for the Prompt Engineering for Northwestern Instructors workshop.

Upcoming Faculty Workshops

Teaching and Learning Technologies offers two-standalone virtual workshops for faculty on generative AI tools.

  • Get to Know Copilot shares information about accessing and using Northwestern’s authorized generative AI tool, Copilot, and making informed choices about when and when not to use it.
  • Prompt Engineering introduces the process of crafting effective prompts, a critical skill needed to understand the limitations of generative AI and optimize current tools. Requires prerequisite of completing the Faculty Literacy Canvas Module or attending the Get to Know Copilot workshop.
