Message from the VP/CIO: Grateful for All of You and What You Do

Dear Northwestern IT Staff,

As we prepare to break for the University’s winter recess, I am sure many of you—like me—are reflecting on what has been a great year of change and uncertainty. What I am most proud of is the way all of you continue to deliver high-quality services to our students, faculty, and staff. Despite uncertainty and stressors in higher education and Northwestern specifically—leadership changes at the University and IT level, staffing reductions, and significant budget challenges—we continue to serve the Northwestern community very well. Some examples include hosting workshops, trainings, and consultations for thousands of faculty and researchers, ongoing enhancements to the University’s network and information security standards, evolving the existing enterprise systems, and managing more than 40,000 service desk requests, to name a few accomplishments. Your influence on this University is deep and impactful. For that, we are very thankful.

I know this year has been challenging for all, both personally and professionally. And now, it’s time to rest and recharge as the winter recess begins at the end of the day on Tuesday, December 23. We will again implement our standard approach to the recess, meaning you should all enjoy your time away from the office as broadly as possible while keeping in mind that our 24/7 essential services will continue from December 24 through January 1, and the campus community can call 847-491-4357 (1-HELP) to access support staff on-call for urgent matters. I know many of you have formalized responsibilities during this period, and others may get called upon to assist. If you fit into this category, we are all grateful for your efforts.

With 2026 on the horizon, I am hopeful for a more stable year. Interim President Bienen said in his recent message, “We are focused on the future.” Our approach in Northwestern IT is no different. We will look to build our team and focus our energy on efforts that advance the University’s mission and institutional excellence. Your input is essential as we move forward, and our leadership team welcomes your thoughts on shaping organizational priorities.

Finally, I want to remind everyone about our annual luncheon on Thursday, January 22, and encourage all of you to join in the festivities. It is a positive way to kick off the new year, and I look forward to celebrating with all of you.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment, perseverance, and support for one another. Best wishes for a happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Sean
