Northwestern Strengthens Campus Cybersecurity with 1Password
Posted Date: October 7, 2025
As part of Northwestern’s continued commitment to bolster cybersecurity across campuses, Northwestern IT is introducing 1Password as a campus-wide password management service, with availability beginning October 9. This tool aims to make it easier for the campus community to protect their credentials, while also streamlining access to services for students, faculty, and staff.
Universities like Northwestern are prime targets for cyberattacks due to the vast amount of personal, academic, and research data they manage, and password compromises remain one of the most common attack vectors. With users navigating a complex digital landscape—ranging from learning management systems and email to research databases and administrative portals—a password manager makes it easier to maintain long, complex passwords and have different passwords for the services you use.
About 1Password
1Password offers encrypted storage, automatic password generation, and alerts for compromised credentials, helping users avoid weak or reused passwords. By securely organizing login credentials, the platform reduces the risk of forgotten passwords and enhances overall digital hygiene.
Who is Eligible
Northwestern provides faculty and staff with a 1Password Business account for conducting University business. A 1Password Families account for personal use is also available at no cost after a 1Password Business account has been established.
Northwestern students can redeem a no-cost Families account for personal use while at the University.
What to Expect
Faculty and staff will receive a welcome message from 1Password. The email provides instructions on how to get started setting up their 1Password Business Account. The timing of these welcome messages may vary across schools and departments.
Students can redeem a four-year, no-cost 1Password Families Account directly from 1Password using your Northwestern student email and promo code. This account is separate from the University—Northwestern will not have access to your vaults or stored information. How to Redeem Your 1Password Student Account.
