Research Computing and Software

Robust and Versatile

Providing Northwestern students, faculty, and staff with innovative computing resources, software, and support to carry out their research activities

Computing resources, including high-performance computer clusters, virtual machines, research software, remote desktop environments, and consultation services, are available to meet the computational needs of all disciplines at Northwestern.

We help Northwestern’s students, faculty, and staff leverage computational resources and software to achieve their research goals at little to no cost. Depending on the needs of each researcher and project, we provide resources and training to empower their work and troubleshoot computational issues.

We support Northwestern students, faculty, and staff researchers in all disciplines. From faculty leading research teams to undergraduates working on research projects for the first time, all researchers are welcome.  Read about past consultations.

We support researchers with:

  • Identifying storage and computing resources for research projects that are unique to each project's needs, including access to the University's high-performance computing clusters, cloud resources, national compute resources, and virtual machines.
  • Software installation and management
  • Building and utilizing virtual environments and software containers
  • Quarterly workshops and orientation sessions
  • Project consultation

Our support and consultation services are offered at no cost. Northwestern students, faculty, and staff can obtain general access to Quest free of cost for research and education purposes. However, researchers who need dedicated access to compute nodes and storage space on Quest can create buy-in allocations with purchased resources.

Funding from the Office of the Provost and Northwestern IT supports the Research Computing and Data Services Team.

Our team can assist you with your research’s computational needs, from identifying appropriate compute resources for your project to onboarding new Quest users, troubleshooting workflows, and increasing job efficiency.

Please submit a consultation request form to learn how to use cloud resources, national compute resources, and virtual machines.

Please visit the Quest Computing Cluster web page for more information about computational services and support at Northwestern.
