Litter League Brings Out Competitive Spirit for a Cleaner Evanston

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Northwestern IT Together helped recruit 27 volunteers from Northwestern IT to take part in a spirited Litter League cleanup event, sponsored by the Office of the Chief Operating Officer, that included volunteers scouring downtown Evanston and nearby beaches for trash.

Facing off against teams of other University staff and volunteers from UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, participants combined environmental stewardship with friendly competition. Armed with gloves, trash grabbers, and bags, the teams worked to collect as much litter as possible while improving the local community.

At the end of the day, Northwestern IT emerged victorious, collecting an impressive 78 pounds of litter. Together, the groups removed a total of 130 pounds of waste from public spaces—materials that can now be properly sorted for recycling or disposal.

Beyond the competition, the event highlighted a shared commitment to sustainability and community engagement. By reducing litter and supporting recycling efforts, volunteers helped make Evanston cleaner and greener while celebrating Earth Day with purpose.
